The first Sunday of May in the year 1921, services were held for the first time in the current church building at 200 South Lake Avenue in Avon Park, but the Methodist Church in the City of Charm had been conducting worship for quite some time before that. It was in 1914, through the efforts of Mr. & Mrs E.L. Hockersmith, a group began to meet on Sunday afternoons to have Sunday School sessions. According to documents from the archives of the Avon Park Historical Society, the church itself was organized that same year following a "tent revival" which was held on Lake Avenue just north of the Mall. Rev. J.G. Holt was the preacher. The congregation moved from place to place over the years, first meeting in the old schoolhouse. They later met in city hall, then gathered at an old tin building on Forest Street. Their final church was in the theatre building on Main Street. It was at the Second Quarterly Conference in 1919 a building program was authorized. Specifications for a brick structure was approved. The estimated cost was set between $10,000 -- $12,000. Mr. C.E. Lanier and Mr. Chesley Skipper donated the land between Lake Avenue and Forest Street for the building. In later years, a parsonage was added. |
